water water everywhere

March 29: Venice

Today, it rained. Sad day. As a result our day wasn't very busy at all. After I gave the girls pedicures last night, we slept in and took a late water taxi to Murano, an island known for glass works.

After a demonstration and a tiptoe through insanely expensive shops, we headed back. My umbrella decided to self-destruct and in the process slice my finger. Actually now that I think about it, none of us had particularly good umbrella luck, ever. Anyway, we ate an interesting pizza lunch at a restaurant with creative pizza names and such delicacies as octopus salad.

After that we caught up with email at an internet cafe, and headed back to the apartment where I gave most of the girls pedicures to get ready for Grecian beaches and warmer weather. :)

It was pretty drizzly outside so we put our wet clothes back on and took the walkways (basically, short tables lined up along the streets for the probably frequent overflowing) to a nice restaurant with succulent lasagna. After a taste of mint chocolate chip gelato it was back to the apartment to relax and pack up for an early train to Naples!

*After returning to the US, and watching a good number of movies (hey, it's summer) I can't believe how many references to Venice, and actual shots of the city, are in films. And in sample photograph pictures at craft stores. It is so fabled, so venerable, so mysterious. Venice is definitely a must-see kind of city in your lifetime. Even in bad weather, it is still beautiful!
